Remembering the Past, Educating the Future
The Modern 5th Minnesota
Company D, Fifth Minnesota Infantry has existed as a reenactment organization since approximately 2008, being an offshoot of the larger Fifth Minnesota Infantry Regiment, which is based in southern Minnesota. Company D represents the historical unit that served in Dakota Territory during the Dakota War of 1862.

Our unit provides educational programming for libraries and historical organizations on a variety of topics related to the Civil War era. Recently we have hosted such events for the Hawley Public Library in Hawley, MN, as well as events at the Fargo (ND) and Moorhead (MN) Public Libraries.
Our members have several years of experience in the reenacting hobby and also have a diverse array of backgrounds, including professional historians, educators, medical, and even a chef, so we not only eat well, but can discuss a variety of topics on the war. We have members who portray soldiers and others who portray civilian roles during the war.
Over the years, we have sought to provide as authentic a portrayal as possible and we always strive for excellence and professionalism in our programming and impressions. To that end, we regularly host “work parties” where we pick a period item to make for unit members to add to their equipage, including hard tack boxes, ammunition boxes, tent poles, baking hard tack, or learning to create small items for use in your kit.
If you are interested in having us come to your location and put on a presentation, or display, or, if you desire to have us come and run a work party for your organization (provided you have access to the appropriate tools and equipment for what you wish to make), please do not hesitate to contact us to inquire about scheduling us.
