How to Wear Uniforms and Equipment
The image below (artist unknown) is a good illustration of basic Civil War infantry gear. There are many options to personalize your look and still be historially accurate. As always, use caution when buying any equipment. Sutlers are businesses that sell historic reproductions for reenactors, movies, and museums. Unfortunately, their items aren't always "period correct," meaning that they are not from the Civil War period. Buying the right stuff can make a huge difference. Before making any large purchases, please consult the unit quartermaster.
A fair representation of common Union ranks. This is by no means a complete listing, and the curved lower chevrons on the Sgt. Maj. and Qmsrt Sgt. should be straight.
The illustration below shows a typical layout for a camp inspection.
